First Off, Remember the rules, breaking them can get you temp or permanently banned, depending. (EG Being Abusive in your speach, creating more than one account, and that other stuff)
And 2nd, you'll get bombarded with faction invites at the start, Pick the order of the samurai or alliance of avalon, they are the best for newbies i have seen. Samurai is the faction i'm in, I'd be happy to help you when you join.
third, Do not attack anyone at first! your starter ship has a 20th of the firepower one of the big ship's guns!
This does not mean that you can not topple a big faction ( :P [Whistle Whistle] (JK) ) It Just means you have to build yourself up.
4th Realixe that most of the time you will be mining, trading and manufacturing to build yourself up!
Now, Remember this: Get a V2 Miner at the start, the freighter has 2X the cargo but the miner will let you do a lot more! and the merchant is just an oddball ship.

And Yes there are mindless slaves and those with god complexes, EG just like its real. (In Star Wars the emperor had a "God Complex" and so did some of his admirals.)
