Sops is a great game, but if you are married or have a family that plays, don't bother. My husband and I have been playing sops for about 6 - 8 years now and we are constantly getting locked for being a multi, even though all the mods know we're not and know who we are. One round you have to email 3 mods and have them green light you, the next round you don't have to then the next round you get locked because you didn't email 3 mods. Like it's not bad enough already that my husband and I have to be on the same system and can not probe or attack the same player. The mods also, if they don't like you will lock you for one reason or another. Then when you message a mod about being locked you basically get told you are harrassing them and you need to read the rules. My husband and I go by the rules more then the mods do...but we still get locked. If you like being locked or are not playing with a family member or friend you will be fine.

Awesome - Best Text Based Game By Far

Ive looked at the reviews and funny enough 99% of the bad reviews are by regular players that have played for years and still play now , Surley that is enough to prove its a good game if the people who dislike it cant get enough of it ... Infact one of those players is now an admin and the game has evolved so much.

The game itself is ever growing and improving , the moderators are friendly and helpfull. Dont get me wrong they can be harsh and punish you if you try to cheat/break rules ect but they are fair down to the end.

The rounds have 3 speeds to choose from (1 hour ticks/20min ticks/10min ticks) and occasionly the fourth server dies were players join and fight to the death , once dead they canot rejoin and see whom is crowned champion.

The systems in the game all have regular players that class them as thier home systems .. Joining these systems will help you as a new player learn the ropes and the tactics of those systems. Some systems and player like to attack everyone for land and grow .. others like to trade and some like to reserch.

Id suggest trying the game , Infact Join "Ragnarok" and "GroveStreet" will help you out (thats me).

The game is awesome and ive played for about4 years now.

Even now the games improving and being updated.

Been a few years since the reviews, time for an update.

This game is one word, addicting. I find most of my time spent playing this great game, as do others. Since 2004 (the date of the last review) many things have changed. Two new servers have been added, just with different "revolution" times making gameplay change a bit for the members that are used to slower ticks.

Server one is still the main game, made a while back. It has always been the original, with Modern-War-Generals made by the same creator later, then the creation of Server two and three of Shadowops.

However, it has gotten easier on server two with the shortage of players. Server three requires more activity, and server one needs barely any. Whatever floats your boat decides what server to start on.

Server one - 1 hour revolutions
Modern-War-Generals - 30 minute revolutions
Server two - 20 minute revolutions
Server three - 10 minute revolutions

Overall, this game is fairly easy to get hooked to. Gameplay is simple to understand, and the community is great. You join up in a system of your choice, pick your name and playertype (how you want to play the game) and you are placed in a sector in the system you chose.

Once again, the community is great and welcoming, always wishing for more members to join. Make new friends, take down enemies, and have fun while doing it. To do all of this, join Shadowops, one of the greatest free text based war games on the net.

New Age of Shadow-Ops

There are many old reviews of this game by people who felt the same exact way I did. I played this game back when it was getting started and witnessed firsthand the cheating which is mentioned in some bad reviews. It is true, it happened. I quit after a long devotion of trying to put up with it.

Just recently I returned just thinking I'd stop by and see if any old friends were still around. BAM, that's when I realised the game had changed drastically, and is a million times better taken care of.

If you want a good game, playable by any age group, and a great way to have fun and make friends, then join S-Ops TODAY!!!! (and heck, if you need some help try and find me in-game and I'll see what I can do :P)

A Tyrant, A Bribe, A Hack.... the three rulers of shadowops

Shadowops.... a beautiful idea. A game that was to change the way online games were made and played. And then.... the dream was destroyed by who would become the three rulers of it... first is the tyrant (warsome) creator of the game... what they dont tell you is that he also plays it and he cheats like crazy. whenever his fleet goes out the ticker runs fast so they come in quickly. a bribe... the second ruler... if you have a bunch of real cash lying around... come play where you buy your way to the top. if you dont have cash you can play this "free" game but you cant compete when others are buying game resources. warsome even altered the code so you cant attack more than once a day without being eaten alive by his AI players unless you pay him real money... then there is the hack... the server is constantly being Ping spammed and hacked and turns are just being lost. in a game where you are supposed to get resources ever hour we have days where over 24 hour periods you get maybe 5 hours worth...
i have been playing this game for 4 months now and i have seen the greatest it can be... and now... ive seen the worse. Oh and another thing... see the number average for all our votes... its modified by the tryant when the links to come here automatically cast a vote of 10 instead of letting us choose....

Awsome Game, Worst Admin

This game is great, plain and simple. It is just awsome. There is only 1 major problum however. The Admin. Yes, once again a player has the balls to speak up about this games Admin. Last players that did were locked and even hacked. Hoping it won't happen to me. Most experianced players in this game knows the admin hacks, however either they have been let into this games Admins "Elite" group, or they don't want to forfiet such a great game. I wish there was some way that this games admin could be replaced, but he is the creator of the game, so I guess its not possible. I am not rating this game a 1. I am rating its Admin a 1. Please do aomthing about this admin, he abuses his power (I have seen this many, many times), he lets ppl in his system abuse the rules, and he plays his own game and lets ppl know he does. Please do somthing about this, it is unfair to the people playing this game, and its experianced players. I have seen it time and again, the Admin and his system always win. How can someone prove they are the best at a game when the one who created it, who knows all the loop holes, who can change the game whenever he gets mad, or pissed off plays it!

Shadowops Rockzz!!!

Shadowops is just the best game around. I have played serveral games like starkingdoms, galactic-quest, mwm, and much more but that wouldnt last long. Because it got boring. But shadowops is different i got addicted to it and am still playing for over an year now. It's just great. And about the last review that dude i just giving shadowops a bad name. All he says isnt true. He abused a bug so the admin deleted him. (DIDNT EVEN BANNED HIM)So he could sign up again if he wanted to. But he didnt want to and is now yelling everywhere S-ops Admin's are cheating.

Just come and play Shadowops and ull find out that isnt true. Its a fair as it can get. No cheating, Sometimes a bug reaches the surface but that will get fixed asap.

So I just say IF u dont believe it. Goto: www.shadowops.net and sign-in and just see for ur self how GREAT this game is.

I am going to address this as a rebuttal to the reviewer that stated the administrator was cheating.

An event happened where the server was updated to address an issue. As a result of this, ALL kingdoms who had ships out had their Leaders return early. That the admin had his return early also is covered by the "ALL".
Many players just wouldn't accept this and had to go on and on that the Admin was cheating.
The game is handled VERY fairly. Players are locked out when they break the rules, such as Hacking the game code, Being abusive in language used, Playing Multiple accounts etc. Rules are clearly stated at sign-up, and also when you log-in you have the oppurtunity to review these rules.
For a free game I find this to be MOST acceptable.

A great way to challenge yourself

This game is great! It's creative, and it's challenging without being impossible. It's not the simplest game, but there are so many people so willing to help you figure it out and have fun that it takes no time at all to learn. And the help section is one of the most in depth I've ever seen. Some complain that the administrator cheats (something I haven't noticed), and I've seen at least one review that complains that the game "lags" (an impossible thing, given it's based in rounds), but if hundreds of people come back time and again to play this game, that should say a lot more than the complaints of one or two people. It isn't fast, or action packed, but it's a great way to meet fun, interesting people, and work with them to achieve a common goal.

Woah.

Thats all I can say. Woah! Shadowops... What seems like a regular text based game has somehow managed to totally encapture me into its game play. Simply stated this is the best of the 15 + online games of this genre I have tried. And not by a small margin ever.
I've been playing games such as this for longer than anyone I know (infact I've been using computer based ones since the early 80's when my father ran a mail-move one from home, a pair of Apricots acting as his super fast server (they ran at a max of 4 MHZ). So we could say I have a little experience in the genre. ShadowOps blew me away. Totally. The game play is challanging, but so much fun, the community very supportive, almost friendly, and your sector mates are ALWAYS willing to help you solve problems.
The admin team are great, keeping the game balanced and fair, donating much of their time to providing one of the ultimate gaming experiences ever. BEWARE! After one day playing you will be sitting by your computer endlessly pressing refresh as the hour ticks over so you can do more. The game is more than addictive...
If you don't believe me, come try it :)

iv searched for games on the net for months but this has got to bw the best iv found. its a team based game, where you can help out your allies and betray you enemies. people have said that the admins cheat but this is false. it is true the game was changed during a round, but that was to stop new people from dying. yes it helped the admin and his allies but he did not cheat he simply tried to give everybody a chance. unfortunately the game may not run for very long anymore as the false reviews by other upset players who were losing have made sponsors of the game withdraw. so join the text- and team-based friendly game with friendly people, and if you believe it is good please help to sponsor or donate a few dollars to it

Lies

I belive that those 2 reviews about the cheating admin are complete BS. Why? Why else would someone post such garbage is because they want to ruin every other 99% of the population playings time and care put into this game. The statements are false and I belive those 2 people are actually 1 person using different handles.
I have only played this game for a month. And I fell in love with it. Why? Because REAL people with REAL lives of there own and REAL personalities run this game. I met friend and Foe on here and could honestly say I liked them both. So in my final opinion. The only person who feels CHEATED it me.. Why? Because I never got the plessure of vaporizing his kingdom first. Scan this jerk face! *middle finger*

This game is GREAT! it takes some stratagy, lots of teamwork and communication, and most of all NO MONEY! so u can pick, wanna be the biggest baddest attacker, or the richest economest, maybe u want the best ships go for researcher, this game can take up HOURS of time just pondering, but u don't have to if u don't want to! so whether u build lots of quick fighters or the stealth cloak bombers, just make sure u got probes too other wise players will steal your resources ( or don't it makes it easier for me :D) this game has TONS of places for u to addapt what you build... the game always need turns, so how about every hour? not 20 mins (unless u join server 2) for a slow, but still demanding game pace that will only get funner the bigger you get!

First, MMORPG's rock, second ShadowOps rocks the hardest. Played like a zillion different MMORPG's and having expirienced a lot of different game types and styles, my vote would go to this game as being the best.
The variation in this game can't be compared to anything else, teamwork as well as individual actions are rewarded, taking action against foes and making diplomatic relations with other systems is something I already saw.
But never in the same game and surely not as easy to use like in ShadowOps.
Nice layout on all pages, great work designer, with an all worked out help section.
Thx for all the efforts Admin and crew have put in this game and hope I wil be able to play for a long time.

Interesting Game

I recently joined up with this game as well.

I was glad when I found this game because I was itching to play a decent space combat strategy game. The gameplay so far is fairly easy to comprehend. You build your fleet from a decent selection of both fighters and starships while you use probes to steal resources and sabotage your opponent.

You use research to gain the higher end ships and fighters as well as improved turrets for defense and missiles to launch at your enemies.

The most interesting feature in Shadowops is the System Fleet in my opinion. Your system leader can institute a draft of your ships (or you can donate them) to help bolster the systems fleet. He can then use this fleet in wars against the other systems in the game.

I honestly have few complaints with this game so far. One of them being the names for the various systems. A few of them being copied from other sources. However these minor things will likely be changed as the game grows in popularity.

ShadowOps is by far the greatest game that I have found online and its free. ShadowOps by far beates most of the online games that I have payed for! I found this game because I was looking for gameplay excatually like this. Even thou this is a text based game, I really don't think it should ever become anything more than that. I like the way the probes steal and plunder the system of your choice. And the help of your team mates is great because I have asked a coule of members for help and they where great. I like this game far more than any other game around, because the lenght of the game is great! It's not a one, two your out of the game like some other games that I have played. You have the chance to defend yourself and to retaliate. I am addicted to this game, and plan on playing it for a very long time!!!!!!!!

An excellent game!

When I first tried out this game, I was skeptical. It has a relatively small number of members, and doesn't have hundreds of servers. I was trying to criticize spelling inconsistences for about one minute before realizing the myriad benefits of playing this awesome game. it appealed to me where other text-based browser games had failed (for example, Kings of Chaos). I will now go through a few points of this game that must be addressed.

1) It's free! Since it's listed on this game site, that should be kind of obvious, but there are no divisions into free versions and member versions. You can donate to the "faster server fund", but there is no obligation or pressure whatsoever to give in order to have a better gaming experience.

2) It's small. How many other games is the game founder and administrator likely to address your problems personally? Warsome (the admin) is always active, fixing bugs as they are found and livening the game up. In a game with tens of thousands of players, it is simply not possibly to deal with user issues on a case-by-case basis. In this game, that is the customer service you get, and for free ^^

3) Play styles are flexible! This is one of my favorite features. Beyond choosing your playtype, you can go it alone and brave the universe on your own, play the black market to make a fortune, sit like a turtle and build defense, attack, spy, etc. There is no set way to play. The market is a function I have never seen on any other game, and is a wonderful addition. Or, you can be a team player.

4)Teamwork. Not only do you play as a kingdom, you play a sector and a system. You elect leaders at every level of command, but do so wisely. They can institute drafts, change system alert levels (and bonuses you could get from them), levy taxes, act as a system bank, etc. Having powerful teammates is an incredible boon. They can help protect you, and contribute to a system-wide treasury that can be parceled out to those in need (or used for anything, and choosing a poor commander could result in system resources being squandered). A system fleet is seperate from your own. You must maintain defenses at all levels, system and personal. A system of individually invincible players could be worn away by attrition if they have a weak system fleet. Commanders and officers get bonuses, your own forums, etc. They can direct system-wise research (impossible for just one person to research nova missiles!), and generally look out for everybody. This incredible team aspect is not be found anywhere else.

5) It's always growing and changing! The admin is always there, making the game bigger and better and smoother with every new round! And the one thing that can make this game get better even faster?

I have played a good number of online browser games, and have ended up quitting most because of this amazing game. You sign up, pick a system and a play style (each with their advantages and disadvantages)then the fun starts. There are many different strategies that people can come up with. Do i make a huge starship fleet so i can rob my enemies territories? Maybe a larger fighter fleet to wear down those same enemies... perhaps a secret and sneaky cloak attack to kill off their population? Or, you could hit a button and watch them go up in flames, all of them greatly satisfying.

Even if i didn't play, i would probably hang around the forums because of how great most of these guys are. Several days before the round starts and systems are allready at each others throats, declaring which is better, and vowing to destroy their enemies. It creates a nicely charged atmosphere of competition, and there are alwys people who are fighting it out. Revenge is a dish served often in ShadowOps, it has no time to get cold.
