Broken Metal 2.0

Just to clerify what Elysium and Tengaku said about Chani and the banning of "players" and the admins lack of commitment to players.

Chani does not have the power she once was, and cannot abuse her powers as she previously did.

It was only one player that got banned for being too good, and that was me (when I was known as Riv Griffen). But that wasnt directly the games fault, Chani had convinced staff members to quit if I wasnt banned because I was "ruining" the game with my warfare, which had actually stopped for some time. It was her that ruined most the game, no one else. And as far as getting banned for exploiting bugs that should of been fixed when reported, thats like murdering someone, admitting to it and not getting arrested, then murdering another person thinking its ok. Stop complaining cheaters.

Neque, the creator, has a life too, he has given ALOT of his time to Broken Metal for absolutely nothing in return, well except alot of players whining and moaning when things dont go their way, I know this better than most as its usually me whining and moaning :P Secondly the game has had alot of things fixed that previously turned players away from the game.

So whether you have played or not, sign up, the whole game just reset recently, and everyone is back on even ground.

Games like this can be ok, don't get me wrong, but the admins don't care about newbies, and if you get good at the game and you get banned for no reason because of a bug they said they ether fix later or couldn't. That ticks me off because I get good at these games at one point then people screw it up. The Ninja rpg, Broken Metal, all of them, good text based games but some have bad service.

Sure, it may not have the flash of some of the games out there, but this game is more about substance than the typical free online mmorpg. You get four ships to build from the ground up, which you can then build into anything your imagination can come up with. You can go for combat, stick to trading, spend time researching, or a number of other things. This game also has a far more in-depth support & social system than most games. The veteran players frequently help the newer players get started, whether through advice, one on one training, or through fleets (clans). The people are generally very friendly, and everybody makes frequent use of the in-game bulleting board system for everything from idle chat to fleet tactics.

Simple, damn good game. Quite a few different ways you can play, whether you only wanna play a couple times a week or a couple times a day this game is for you. You can still become big if you decide to play a couple times a week, so long as you can handle simple maths and politics. Give it a go..

I've been playing Broken Metal since 2003 and think it's absolutely great. You have the freedom to do anything you want. There are good guys and bad guys, but they are all real players with real personality. The reasonably small community of players is welcoming and willing to help new players.

As a caveat, Broken Metal is a game that takes a while to learn, so don't expect an instant shoot-em-up.

Great game

For all you strategy lovers out there this is a great game. Ok the beginning you can make 4 ships, you get these ships bigger by training merchants or other things in the beginning. your goal is to make a good enough ship to fly once you get a good ship that can fly and had decent hull you take off and start spiceing. spiceing is where you buy spice some place and sell it at another place this makes a lot of money you get prestige every time you use turns, fly and you can get it many other ways. prestige gives bonuses every prestige marker you make it to. at 3000 prestige you get a 5th ship. I love this game first of all because my brother made it and its been out there for around 6-7 years so it has many features. you don't get bored of the game because there is so many things to do. The bad reviews are from people who didn't play long enough to figure the game out or they didn't even play it in the first place. they just want their game to go up, seriously play this game for a week or more and you'll love it.

Broken metal is an in-depth strategy game that uses diplomacy, strategic thinking and forward thinking, which can all be a part of playing the game.
A player's task is to build up to 4 ships, this can be from scratch or you can scavenge dead ones and make them your own. If you look carefully through the Help and Strategy forums you can come across some rules of thumb for ship building.
There are many different ships you can build whilst playing this game but there are four main types. To have the best chance of growing efficiently joining a fleet is recommended!

Current players are helpful and will offer you their MSN addresses if you have any questions about the game. Its worth trying to see if you like it.

Open Ended Simplicity

(5/5) Reviewed by User: The Other Steve on Sat Dec 02 2006
This game really needs some time to appreciate fully. The initial resources you're given won't get you very far, but there are lots of bigger players willing to invest in you. This game is ideal for people who like playing politics or like building things up. There aren't a lot of players, so it won't take long before you're a big factor in the game. In most games, you'll feel insignificant if you look at player rankings and high scores; in Broken Metal the high scores are your well-known allies and enemies, that you've talked to and built alongside, warred with and against. Before long, you'll earn your place among them.

The mechanics are complex at first, and balancing your engine systems with your energy capacitors and shielding systems and whatever takes a lot of knowledge and work. If you have ever spent hours designing an RPG character, this game's great for that kind of thing as well.

The players are also very helpful and understanding to newer players and will happily show you the ropes of this game that is well worth the time to learn :)

To refute a previous review:
It's true. There are a few superpowers in this game. It's also true that it can be hard starting out new. What complainers don't tell you is that there are quite a few people that are willing to help you. May it be credits, advice or protection; help is easily attained. The people that complain usually made a fool of themselves on the boards and get their ships blown up because of it.
Admins that don't care? Not hardly. The creator of the game just graduated college and is trying to hold down a real job while 14-year-olds complain about bugs incessantly. He works as hard as he possible can to keep the game fair and functional. As for Chani; sometimes when Admins make tough decisions they get ridiculed for it. Just remember there are always two sides to a story. Try to be as unbiased as humanly possible when forming your opinions, and you'd be suprised the outcome.
I love this game. The design of it, the descrete math, and the imagination you have to utilize are great. I'd substitute 15-20 minutes of this game everday for 2-3 hours with an X**x. Oh wait. I do!!

I've found this game to be HIGHLY addictive!!! This is a thinking person's game, not a boring, one dimensional game!

You build ships, but it takes all aspects into thought, not just how many guns you can stuff on to a hull, but crew, support, and such (You know, Food, Air, ect..).

There's exploration, money making, and of course, war's and dealing with the politics of other's and their interests. There's piracy, trading, comerce, and just about everything else you can think of.

The Forums are good, well attended, and you're not on your own, as the players are happy to pass on their experiences, and offer help, if needed.

Overall, I Love this game! Come and Join Us and "get your fix"!

ask him to fix a bug, he ither makes 200 reasons why he cant/shouldnt, or if he will, it takes forever. or what about the time where he disapeard for 2 months with no warning? then complained because people were angry with out bugs getting fixed?

the boards are dead, the game is ruled by a few super powers and no newbs will ever get a foothold, so no point even starting

Brokenmetal is the only browsergame i played longer than a half year.
I joined the game juli 2003 and since then everything just became even more interesting.

What i liked most in BM was that there is no need to research lvl 1-100 of some kind of building just to research building2 afterwards to get access to the research for building3.
BM is a game that stays close to the player. You are free to travel wherever you want and do whatever the code allows you to do.
Even today the game provides much fun because of the big freedom you and every other player has.
Daily are new problems with other players, ships, fleets or anything you can imagine that could happen in space...

And there is nothing better than feeling the heat of combat when you try some evasive manovers while reasigning your shields to match the enemies fire and prepare your ships defences for a well planned boarding attack.

Not to forget, another point for Brokenmetal is the nice community :P

Besides that the game is going to reset somewhere in the near future.

Well... there is soo much left to say about the game... iam sure that not everybody likes the ammount of freedom and complexity this game provides. But those who do have probably found a nice place to spent some time.

Excuses for the bad spelling... have fun with the game.

Yeah, it's text-based and you have to wait to get turns. But when you play this game for a week or two, you'll know what I'm talking about by saying this is THE BEST online game around.

Best Space Simulation Game EVER

Been playing since around June, 2003. Basically, almost anything is possible in BM. You can build just about any type of ship you can think of; scouts, merchant ships, freighters, warships, carriers, space stations, research vessels, I could go on and on.

I have met very few people that have played BM for over 3 weeks who didnt become completely addicted. Play the game and mess around on the forums, the player base is pretty varied, good/nutreul/evil/n00b/vet's all over the place. Just getting to know the players is enough to get you completely hooked on playing.

Excellent Multi-player Turn-Based Space Faring Strategy

(5/5) Reviewed by User: Doc Legend on Fri Mar 26 2004
Broken Metal is a turn-based space adventuring strategy game. If you want to sit back and enjoy the company of other players (in the forums, or via ship to ship communications), you can do so. There are fleets you can join for a sense of belonging and protection (the majority of players are independent though, and you can get to know them....and you don't NEED to be in a fleet to avoid harassment - usually just not picking fights for yourself is enough to be safe). You build your own spaceships (up to four per player) outfitting and improving them to your own preferences. This isn't just some space cargo game, either. You do make money with merchants, though they do the work- not you - it's mostly automated, and you can advance very quickly if you're smart. Fleets and clans go to war, and discuss, threaten, resolve issues in the forums, which keeps it interesting. This is definitely my kind of game! It isn't for everyone, though. If you're after fast moving visual images and real-time stuff (like a video game), then Broken Metal doesn't fit. However, if you like turn based games (you never have to waste playing time - you get as many turns as anyone else and you can use them all, even if you only log in for a few minutes every couple of days...in other words, nobody can get way ahead of you by investing ridiculous amounts of time playing), and strategy (those that think are likely to excel) in a game that's carefully designed to be realistic and fun, you've found a great one. The game is suited to all ages, and you're never a number (people get to know others by name) and the designers take a personal interest in talking to the players and trying to make the game even better through player's input.

Warning: It's addictive. I play every day.
