Whats the fuss?

(1/5) Reviewed by User: DarkSaber2k on Thu May 03 2007
Personally, I don;t see what the fuss was with this game. It felt very 'seen it before' and got old quick. It barely kept my interest for the week. The community seemed to be largely un-communicative. Maybe I was just in a bard of town, who knows? At the end of the day, if space-based browser games are your bag, give it a whirl. Personally speaking, I'm done.

Best Game Out There!

(5/5) Reviewed by User: SueRan on Thu Apr 19 2007
I don't understand why this game isn't more well known than it is...in my opinion it's the best browser-based game out there, and I've played them all!

There are about 40-50 star systems in this game with more being added all the time. Think of it as a mega-game with free-form roleplay. Each star system could be a huge game all by itself, in fact some players play in one system all the time, and are sought out by other players to act as GUIDES when visiting! Yes, it's THAT big. I found this game on wikipedia and the discription there didn't do it justice. I figured if it was half as good as it seemed, I should try it, but it was...like...ten times as good as it seemed. It takes a good day of gameplay to get the hang of it, but the manuals, tutorials, and FAQ are very well written and a lot of help. The other players are helpful too, and there are several yahoo groups dedicated to the game as well.

Everything you want in a MMORPG is here. It's web based, free (for real), way fun, good strategy elements as well as action, politics, and intrigue. Theres TONS of surprises and unexpected twists. Multiple (thousands) of plotlines. You'll never get bored of this one. Oh, and they don't care if you have multiple accounts, which is really cool because so many in other games use proxys to cheat. In starships it's a level playing field.

I strongly recommend that you at least TRY this game, it's da-bomb.

A GREAT GAME - PLAY IT!

(5/5) Reviewed by User: Gwen1031 on Wed Mar 21 2007
This game is played on grids of 10,000 locations called "systems", there are about fifty of these star systems to play on. Each system is full of adventures, missions, enemies, and other players. The game is HUGE.

I'm a bit upset at reading some of the negative reviews of this outstanding game. Ignore the negative reviews written by those trying to bring the game down. They were written by a group of players who were caught cheating and were ejected from the game. The owners are infact quite fair and impartial, but, allow me to continue.

The game is a little rough on newbies, but only because there is so much to do. The instructions, FAQ, and tutorials are more than enough to get you going, all you need to do is read it. After a few hours of play you'll be flying your starship like a pro. The controls are very intuitive. There is more material being added to this game everyday. I've probably only explored a small fraction of it's potential.

I would suggest to anyone that they at least TRY this game, it's THAT good!

PLAY IT!

I have played this game for about 7 months. It started out slow, but you build up your ship and theoretically make new friends. The other posts about the game are definately correct(albiet the positive one was written by the owner) It is true there is favoritism. The owners do choose sides. The only major problem I have/had(I quit) was the lack of investigation of problems the game was having. Glitches appeared and hindered movement and abilities; therefore creating a flaw that made a fellow players ship damaged. There was no attempt to salvage or communicate about the situation. The fellow player was "labeled" forcing the "paying" player to leave for lack of respect. If that's the kind of game ya'll are interested in...have fun...enjoy the drama...
Thanks for listening.

Some good stuff some bad stuff.

(3/5) Reviewed by User: Spaceguy49 on Sun May 07 2006
First the good stuff. The game's pretty interesting. There's a lot of interesting stuff to discover. It can be slow at first; but if you're patient and build up your ship, you'll enjoy it more and more. There's lot of interesting puzzles to solve to get your starship stronger.
You can make donations to get your ship built up faster, but there's nothing you can buy for ship that you can't earn free in the game. And then there's some stuff that you earn in the game you can't buy with real money.
The controls are real simple to learn.
Now the bad stuff. When they say they're good to new people, it depends. If you join a fleet or keep to yourself, it's all good. But if you cross the game owners or their pet ship owners, they'll hunt you down and make you regret it. I've kept to myself. But the veterans are really harsh to people who ask questions in the game. Also, you're constantly getting knocked off the server do to CPU shortage.

Good news and bad news

(4/5) Reviewed by User: LAshipguy on Sat Apr 29 2006
OK, here's the good news! The game is truly free. You can buy things in the game through donations, but there's nothing you can buy with donations that you can't earn in the game. And there's a lot of things you can't buy with real money. You have to earn in in the game.
There is tons of names you can get for free or you can make a donation and get a special name. I thought that was stupid so I just cycled through the free names until I found one I liked. I think the game designers could have used spell check a couple of times but otherwise everything is pretty cool.
Remember it's a free game so there's not a lot of cool graphics and it's heavy on chat. It is a free game so you're getting a lot for your money.
Now the bad news. If you get on at a high peak time be prepared to get knocked off. And there seems to be a lot of high peak times. I heard the game designers are moving to a new server so maybe that will fix the problem. If you're a newcomer be prepared for the game to be slow and for the veterans to be abusive. To be fair, a lot of new players don't bother reading anyting, so I can understand why the veterans get testy.
There's a built in chat feature called subspace radio that let's players chat in character and gives hints on places to buy things. The radio gets like a soap opera at times.
The one thing you don't want to do is run afoul of a little clique made up of the game designers and their friends. If you do they'll make your lives miserable. But if you just get along and are patient the game can be fun.

Starships!

This is a browser based game. The disadvantages are no fancy 3-D graphics and sound. Advantages: Everything else. The game is well thought out, and a LOT of fun to play. You start out with a little ship that basically mines small asteroids and work your way up to the level of a death-star or V'ger type mega ship. The gameplay is excellent. The community is awesome. The sheer SIZE of the game is truly immense, with millions of locations. New items seem to be added all the time too. Finally, and I saved the best for last, the game is truly free. You can go all the way to the end without spending a single dime. Enjoy!
