VU is a turbased strategy game like no other. It is easy to learn the basics but there is still a big diference between players that played a long time and new players. Even when you just start out you can make a difference. In my second era (1 era=60 real time days) i was conduction all the diplomacy for my Kingdom. VU is a game where you can log on once a day or spend hours contemplating your next move. I give VU 2 thumbs up.

Visual Utopia is a great game, if it's the type you are interested in. I usually do not like these slow turn based game, but this one adds to the genre something the others do not have: a map! Not only can you build an empire and run or join kingdoms, but you can conquer other cities or entire kingdoms! It usually doesn't take very long to play, either. You can log in for about ten minutes to build new buildings and train some soldiers, or you can stay on for half an hour puzzling over the best way to take over that city down the coast. There's an in-game chat window too, so you can talk to other players while you wait for the next turn to come around.

All in all, it is a fun game and I would recommend people to at least give it a shot. The staff is constantly adding to it, so it is probably already better than when I typed this up!

An extremely addicting game that is pretty easy to learn but near impossible to master. It's one of the few games where you actually need strategy to defeat your opponets. I would advise starting in Mantrax world and then after a few eras entering Fantasia. Do not act like an idiot because we have an extremely active community who will deal with you thoroughly. Armies and Cities are only half of the game, choosing the best race and Kingdom is the other part. In the end it's a very fun game that shouldn't be missed by anyone. And it's free.

I've played a bunch of Online Strategy games, and I have to say this one is the best, not only does it have depth with different races (Human, dwarf, elves, halflings, trolls or orcs) There is a very nice, interactive map to play on. So many games have no map (or one that has nothing to do with the game) and it's all practically text based.

Very good game and I encourage anyone with an internet connection and some spare time looking for some good honest gaming fun to try it out.

VU is awesome!

Vu is the perfect Strategy game! It is designed for people who have either not much time on their hands, or alot of time on their hands.

it is completely free (with the option to donate and get a few bonuses.) First you start of by choosing a race (Human, Elf, Dwarf, troll or orc) each with their own unique bonuses! you then go through a quick tutorial to show you how to play. after you have finished the tutorial you are given an army and you must find a place to settle.

The game is very hard if you go independent so you need to find a kingdom if you want to grow! Finding a kingdom is not very hard at all with 5-20 kingdoms made at the end of an era.

So to any one out there thinking of playing this game, you should because it is the best browser played Strategic game ive ever played!

A great game all around. It has a great community and very active forums. Gameplay is very simple to pick up and understand and allows for you to play your own way, and figure out your own styles to attack and defend your empire. The kingdom system is very simple and easy to use. Gameplay itself is very active and requires you to keep a close eye on all the action and it forces you to really use your head to plan moves. All around a great game 5 out of 5.

The best turn-based game

(5/5) Reviewed by User: Gorgon0685 on Tue May 22 2007
If you're looking for constant real-time action, this is not your game. If you want a shoot-em-up, this is not your game.

But if you want an excellent, strategic game, where
* communication with others in your kingdom is crucial,
* diplomacy actually makes a difference,
* the basics are easy to understand, but there are plenty of subtleties to master,
* success can be measured in more than one way

then Visual-Utopia is for you.

VU is a turn (or tick) based game: movement and production occurs on the hour. However, attacks happen between the hours. You also don't have to be online for things to happen: if you lay in a move for one of your armies, then log-off, the move will happen while you're gone. Same with construction and accumulation of resources.

VU is almost impossible to play as a loner -- you really need to find a good kingdom to join if you want to survive. However, finding a kingdom to join is not difficult, and kingdom interaction becomes one of the better parts of the game.

Some have complained about lagging or bugs. I haven't experienced any lagging, though I don't use the in-game chat (our kingdom uses IM and the in-game forums instead). Although there are a few known bugs, I've never personally encountered them. All-in-all the game seems very stable.

It is possible to start the game in a very bad position. Sometimes, it's just bad luck, and you need to try again. Once you join a kingdom, things get better.

Also, VU restarts frequently, and if you're starting the game near the end of an "era", it's harder to make good progress. Just hang in there until the next era begins, and things will be much better.

This is a great game -- the best free game of its type that I know of. Oh, and it is truly free. You can buy bonus turns, but you can get along very well without them (I have).

The good part is that you get to create your own colony and raise armies, but whats the point is it takes forever. Only play this game if you have time (4 hours should be good).

VU - A vicious struggle for Total Domination

(5/5) Reviewed by User: Engelhardus on Sat Mar 11 2006
Visual Utopia, its an excellent game. That lad that made that search-other-job remark should wash his mouth, preferably with bleach.

Anyway, in VU you start out as poor, humble peasant full of ideas and ambition. After founding your first city it won't take long for people to notice you. I'll be honoust with you, most of the time its hostile attention thats why you should look for an kingdom to team up with that share's the same ideas and believes as you do and strive together for global domination or whatever else you fancy :)

I personally find VU such an great game because it combines a lot of resources (Food, Stone, Tree, Gold and Slaves) and puts it in an easy to manage though ingenious put together building system. It won't be long or you too will have huge cities that dominate the landscape.

To progress in time you can use 'Bonus Turns' or wait for fifty minutes to pass. Every fifty minutes will set the time one VU day forward. In such a 'day' buildings are being build, soldiers march and new recruits are being steamed for a live in the mud.

And as such we are getting to my favorite part, war! War is an essential part of VU, for war gives you the options to kill those who oppose you. You start out with fifty soldiers that represent your personal lifeguard. Soon you will feel the need to train more soldiers for you begin to notice the greed in other people's eyes. With an good, balanced economy this shouldn't be a problem and soon you'll create huge armies consisting of hundreds of thousands a troops or vast, elite squadrons.
However, what one man can do, another man can do. Thats why it is so important to team up with other, reliable, players. Armies are the tools but strategy, teamwork and politics are the key to winning VU.

I could tell so much more about VU but words couldn't describe it all. VU is something that you need to experience, something that you need to do to capture its beauty. I myself was sceptical in the beginning, but this free game has me already hooked longer then any other game out there and if online games are your kind of poison, then don't wait longer but for the love of God sign up and strive along!
